Short sell

A friend of mine found a house that is going through a short sell and he wants t buy it. But the bank that is going through the short sell says it'll take at least 3 months before he can buy it. Any idea why it might take that long?

May be they have not cleared to whom this house belongs.

We had this in our neighbourhood. An old couple died and they found a few familiy members, who could inherite. These things take time often.
