How much money does a real estate agent earn?

I'm wondering if how much money does a real estate agent earn. What's the basis of their earning. And what does she/he have to do to earn more?

It varies from country to country.

When I worked in real estate in the UK, the business would get a fixed fee for selling your property. About nine years ago that was about 1,000 GBP. That was paid to the agent upon completion.

Here in Spain an agent can charge a percentage of the property price, at the moment the standard rate is about ten percent. With the average house costing around €150,000 , that is one hell of a profit.
