How to embed a link

I'd like someone to explain to me in very simple terms how I can embed a link into a single word. I have googled and I just get told to use html, for instance
<a href "url" > "word" </a
where "url" is the link I want to embed and "word" is the word I want to be the link but it doesn't work. Do I leave the quotation marks in or not?

To make a link post, <a href="http://www.url.com"/your words</a>. where your words is the link post that directs to the url.
