Default What is the difference between SATA and IDE?

Hello friends.. My hard drive that i was using is IDE type. and now when i buy a new one i could get a SATA one which is called as Serial ATA. so what is the difference between the both? i could see reduced pins for SATA device, will that reduce the speed?
