will influence of magnetic field over a hard disk surface erase that data?

Hello friends.. It is usually said that hard disk data is recorded magnetically. SO if it is magnetic disc recoding. when i place a strong magnet in front of the hard disk surface, is it possible to effect the data stored in the disc?
