Cell phones and young people

I read that cell phone companies have marketing campaigns out targeted for children as young as 8-12 years old. Do you think that kids should have their own cell phone?

I think that's a bit young for a cell phone but I see kids out there that young who have them. I can see them needing a cell phone when they are in high school as they'll likely be out and about without parents a lot more often.

Yeah I agree, I would have no problem with it when they are teens. You can activate a GPS tracker from the main phone on my service with out the other phones knowing so you can always know where the phone is. That would be good with teens. Still I do not think my young kids need a cell phone.

I think that is too young to have a cell phone too. I don't plan on getting my daughters a cell phone until high school unless they start doing something in middle school such as sports.

I'm sure helicopter parents love the idea of being able to constantly contact their kids, but I don't think children need to be encouraged to spend too much time on the phone at such a young age. Still, it might be a good idea for kids to have cell phones on hand for use in emergency situations.

It has become quite a necessity today even for the teens, like when their parents need to know their whereabouts and when they want to coordinate their classes. It definitely has some importance but as parents we should know that teens should be curbed by their frequent and for hours usage.
